In a surprising turn of events, the residents of Mende Estate Villa in Maryland, Lagos State, are in upheaval following the sudden demolition of their homes by the Lagos State Government. The residents, who are now faced with homelessness, are clamoring for fair compensation and a sustainable resettlement plan.
During a visit to the devastated site on Sunday, it was evident that many families were in a rush to salvage whatever belongings they could. The local homeowners expressed profound distress over the abrupt loss of their homes, with no immediate alternative accommodations available.
In an interview with local media, one resident lamented the lack of communication from the state authorities regarding the demolition or future plans. "We were engaged in discussions with the government as recently as yesterday, and suddenly, bulldozers were at our doorsteps," he shared.
The demolition was officially justified by the need to clear the Odo Iya Laro drainage channel, according to Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources. However, this rationale has done little to appease the community, nor has it addressed concerns about the actual necessity and timing of such drastic action.
Prominent Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade, also criticized the demolition, highlighting its potential negative impact on investor confidence in Lagos's real estate sector. Additionally, reports surfaced about lack of prior notices and potential legal actions from the residents who claim their properties had official approval.
Despite assurances from Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information, that there had been extensive negotiations and no two-hour eviction notices were issued, the community's trust remains deeply shaken.
