Dr. Doyin Okupe, former presidential spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP), has declared that his support for former Senate President Bukola Saraki and LP presidential candidate Peter Obi is driven by a desire for capable leadership, not personal gain. Okupe made this known in an open letter responding to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu.
Momodu had previously addressed President Bola Tinubu, urging him to cease squandering resources and instead invest in vocational skills for youth. In response, Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, countered Momodu's claims in a post titled “Response To My Beloved Senior, Dele Momodu: Nigeria’s Economy Is Not Collapsing. Far From It!” Okupe commended Omokri’s response, praising it as a “masterpiece filled with unassailable facts.”
Okupe emphasized that his support for Saraki and Obi is based on their shared values and commitment to Nigeria’s progress. He compared his associations with Saraki and Obi to Dele Momodu’s association with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, asserting that these relationships were built on a common goal of national betterment rather than political convenience.
Okupe stressed that his involvement in various administrations aimed to provide guidance and support for the country’s development. He defended his support for Saraki and Obi, stating it was not for personal gain but to see capable leaders succeed. Okupe acknowledged the temporary hardships caused by recent reforms but deemed them necessary for long-term economic growth and stability. He praised the government's efforts to mitigate these effects and urged continued diligence in addressing Nigerians' concerns.
