Federal Government to Enhance Surveillance on Third Mainland Bridge with CCTV Installation

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the Federal Government will install closed-circuit television cameras and solar lighting on the Third Mainland Bridge by June this year to combat the persistent issue of illegal sand mining. The initiative, revealed during his inspection of various bridge projects including Iddo, Carter, and Third Mainland Bridges in Lagos, aims to protect the integrity of these crucial infrastructures.

"We are almost done with the deck work on the bridges, and we are extending the deck job. Additionally, we are setting up CCTV and an observation room. Below the deck, we are focusing on the piers and pier caps," Umahi explained. The contractor, Julius Berger, has been commended for their pace of work, which is on track to anticipate the upcoming lagoon tide in June.

The surveillance enhancement comes as a part of broader efforts to address the deterioration caused by erosion and illicit activities such as sand mining, which have significantly damaged the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge. "The piles' integrity has been compromised over the years due to illegal mining and natural erosion, exposing and rusting the reinforcements within the concrete piles," said Umahi.

In response to these challenges, the minister disclosed plans to consult with Julius Berger and other international firms to devise a remedial strategy for the bridge's piles. This plan includes a comprehensive examination of the structural conditions and subsequent engineering interventions to restore and maintain the bridge's safety.

Furthermore, the minister highlighted ongoing and future renovations across several other bridges in Lagos and nationwide, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and functionality of critical infrastructure. "Our commitment extends beyond Lagos as we plan similar interventions for bridges across the country, which are crucial for national connectivity and security," Umahi added.

The installation of the CCTV and solar lighting systems is part of a larger national effort to enhance infrastructure security and monitor critical locations to prevent activities that could compromise structural integrity.
