In a significant enforcement action, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed numerous establishments, including churches, hotels, and bars across Lagos due to violations related to noise pollution. The commissioner for environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced these measures through his X social media platform on Friday.
The facilities affected are located in various parts of Lagos including Ifako-Ijaiye, Abesan Estate, Abule-Egba, Alagbado, Command, and Dopemu. Among those closed are the Catholic Church, 1602 Hotel, Seventh Heaven Bar & Lounge, Lourita Hotel & Suites, God’s Porch Ministries, and Wonderful Bible Prayer Ministries. Additionally, White Pavilion Hotel, Quest Hotel & Suites, Excel Hotel & Suite, and HoneyComb Confectionery Limited were also sealed.
The shutdowns are temporary but aim to ensure these establishments comply with the state’s environmental laws regarding noise levels. LASEPA has underscored the importance for all businesses to adhere to environmental standards to prevent such sanctions.
This action is part of a broader clampdown on noise pollution in Lagos, with previous closures involving religious houses, hotels, event centers, and clubhouses. The standard approved noise level in residential areas of Lagos is capped at 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. The state’s commitment to enforcing these regulations underscores its dedication to improving the living conditions of its residents by mitigating noise pollution.
