Federal Poly Ede Expels 27 Students, Suspends 8 Amid Unrest

The Federal Polytechnic Ede has taken disciplinary action against 27 Higher National Diploma (HND) students, expelling them for their involvement in a riot on campus. Additionally, eight students have been suspended.

The unrest, which occurred in May, saw students assaulting staff and damaging vehicles in protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arresting some of their peers.

In response to the violence, the institution established a panel to investigate the incidents. According to the school's spokesperson, Sola Lawal, the panel's investigation led to several conclusions and subsequent disciplinary measures.

"The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State constituted an investigative committee to unravel the circumstances surrounding the students’ crisis and rampage on May 9, 2024," Lawal stated. "The unprovoked behavior led to the vandalization of both individual and institutional properties. This action contradicts the institution's values of knowledge, skill, and character."

Following a thorough investigation, the institution decided to expel 27 students across HND1 and HND2. Additionally, eight HND1 students have been suspended for two academic sessions, and two former student union leaders have been banned from entering both campuses immediately.
