Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reported a notable decline in crime rates across Nigeria over the past few months, attributing this improvement to the strategic efforts of the police force.
During a meeting with Commissioners of Police in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun highlighted a significant reduction in major crimes, noting a drop to 416 incidents in the last month, compared to 734 in May and 530 in June. He commended the personnel of the Force for their dedication and commitment to implementing effective strategies.
"It is gratifying to note that the strategies deployed and duly executed by our officers, combined with their undiluted passion and commitment, have yielded significant results across the nation," Egbetokun stated. "This is clearly evident by the steady decline in crime rates over the past few months."
He added that the police achieved remarkable successes in combating criminal activities in the past month, resulting in the arrest of 1,284 individuals nationwide. Additionally, the police recovered 284 firearms, 6,702 rounds of ammunition, 107 vehicles, and rescued 97 kidnapped victims.
Egbetokun also addressed the achievements of the IGP Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Corporate Activities, which has been restructured to combat oil theft more effectively. The task force recently intercepted suspected stolen goods, arrested perpetrators, and seized exhibits, with most cases already in court and others under investigation.
The IG emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration with the public and other security agencies, attributing the recent successes to these partnerships. "The achievements recorded are the outcome of cooperation and collaboration with members of the public and other security agencies. They are also testaments to your dedication and professionalism," Egbetokun concluded.
