Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has revealed that approximately 12 additional schools in Jos are at imminent risk of collapse. This alarming disclosure follows the recent tragic collapse of the Saints Academy Jos building—a two-storey structure that resulted in the death of over 24 people and left many others injured and hospitalized.
During the inauguration of a Technical Committee to investigate the Saints Academy collapse, held at the Twin Theatre, New Government House Little Rayfield, Jos, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the urgency of the situation. The committee’s primary task is to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the collapse and scrutinize the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the building's construction and maintenance.
Governor Mutfwang articulated the critical need for this investigation, stating, “We must understand why this incident occurred, identify any lapses in duty, and implement measures to prevent a recurrence. The safety and integrity of our buildings are paramount, and we must take decisive action to protect lives.”
The governor highlighted the gravity of the situation by pointing out that the collapse of the Saints Academy, which claimed the lives of 24 children, underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures. He reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing stringent regulations to ensure that such tragedies do not repeat in the future.
In addition to the investigation into the Saints Academy collapse, Governor Mutfwang has also instructed the Secretary to the State Government to expand the committee’s mandate. The committee is now tasked with including an examination of the burnt Jos Main Market, where reports indicate that the remaining structure is also at risk of collapsing. This broader scope aims to address potential risks and vulnerabilities in other critical infrastructure in the state.
The governor’s directives come in response to growing concerns about the safety of public buildings in Jos and other parts of Plateau State. The recent incidents have highlighted significant deficiencies in construction standards and building safety protocols, prompting a renewed focus on regulatory oversight and preventive measures.
Governor Mutfwang’s initiative is a critical step towards enhancing the safety of educational institutions and other public structures in Plateau State. By addressing the risks associated with the remaining at-risk schools and other vulnerable buildings, the administration aims to safeguard lives and restore public confidence in the safety of infrastructure within the state.
The Technical Committee is expected to deliver its findings and recommendations in the coming weeks, providing a comprehensive report on the causes of the collapse and proposing actionable measures to prevent future incidents. Governor Mutfwang has assured the public of his administration's commitment to implementing the committee’s recommendations and ensuring that the necessary safety measures are put in place.
As Plateau State grapples with these significant challenges, the focus remains on achieving lasting solutions that will protect lives and ensure the safety of all public buildings across the state.
