Army Reiterates Ban on Civilian Use of Military Camouflage

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its prohibition against civilians wearing military camouflage, emphasizing that the practice remains illegal.

Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, stated that the ban is necessary due to the misuse of military camouflage by terrorists and imposters. This misuse has led to significant security risks and criminal activities.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to reiterate that only personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force are legally permitted to wear military camouflage. The ban on unauthorized use is in full effect due to the exploitation of such attire by individuals committing crimes,” Nwachukwu said.

The Army also addressed a viral video showing a soldier confronting a civilian in military camouflage. Nwachukwu clarified that the video, which depicts an altercation from 2021, is being circulated again by those with either outdated information or malicious intent. He confirmed that the soldier involved in the incident was promptly tried and punished.

“The video in question is old and was initially shared to create unnecessary tension between the military and the public. The Nigerian Army took swift action at the time, and the soldier involved was held accountable for his actions,” Nwachukwu added.

The Nigerian Army remains committed to enforcing the law and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
