African Champion Nwali Triumphs at Ultimate Scrabble Showdown

Africa’s top-ranked player, Enoch Nwali, emerged victorious at the inaugural Ultimate Scrabble Showdown, held over the weekend in Lagos. Nwali clinched the title with a narrow 11-10 win over Timilehin Doko, demonstrating strategic prowess and quick thinking throughout the 21-game series.

The intense final match was streamed globally, attracting Scrabble enthusiasts from around the world. Both Nwali and Doko, who are undergraduate students at the University of Lagos, earned wildcards for the next edition of the competition, which promises to feature a broader lineup of champions.

Expressing his joy after the win, Nwali said, “I am happy and excited to have won the first edition of the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown. It’s a very good platform and it’s going to be better. Doko is a very good player and I expected the tough challenge; that happens when two top players meet. I had to give it my all.”

The two competitors received various prizes and will also receive stipends for the next eight weeks, as announced by the organizers.

The Ultimate Scrabble Showdown was conceived by former national champion Olatunde Oduwole. The closing ceremony saw attendance from notable figures in the Scrabble community, including the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) Players’ Representative Segun Durojaye, promoters Ebikeme Adowei and Charles Uzamere, Lagos State Scrabble Coach Ayomiposi Akinfemisoye, and other enthusiasts.
