Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has commended Team Nigeria for their standout performances at the World Relays Championship in the Bahamas, which culminated in securing spots for both the men’s 4x400m and the mixed 4x400m relay teams at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
In a remarkable display of speed and teamwork, the Nigerian men’s 4x400m relay team, consisting of Dubem Nwachukwu, Dubem Amene, Sikiru Adeyemi, and Chidi Okezie, clocked an impressive time of 3:01.70. This time not only secured their Olympic qualification but also marked the fastest performance by a Nigerian male relay team since the 2004 Athens Olympics, where the team clinched a bronze medal.
The mixed relay team, featuring Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Chidi Okezie, and Esther Elo Joseph, also excelled, finishing second in their heat with a time of 3:13.79. Their strong finish ensured a consecutive Olympic appearance in this relatively new event.
Senator Enoh, in expressing his pride and congratulations, noted, "I am immensely proud of our Team Nigeria athletes for their exceptional performance at the World Relays Championship, which has secured two qualification tickets for the Olympic Games already."
In his statement, signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Diana-Mary Nsan, the minister praised the athletes' dedication, determination, and resilience which he said have brought great honor to the nation. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining their hard work and perseverance as they continue to compete for additional Olympic qualification spots in upcoming events.
The minister's message underlines his confidence in the athletes' abilities and his encouragement for them to continue representing Nigeria with excellence on the global sports stage
