Heavy Security and Panic Buying as IPOB Commemorates Biafra Heroes Day

As anticipation mounts for today's Biafra Heroes Day, declared by the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) across the South-East region, security measures have been heightened, triggering a sense of apprehension among residents.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, took preemptive action by deploying policemen across schools in the state ahead of the commemoration. Similarly, the Enugu State government has rebuffed IPOB's sit-at-home order for the day, asserting its readiness to thwart any potential disruption of peace and order.

In a proactive move, IPOB had urged the West African Examination Council to reschedule WASSCE papers slated for May 30 and advised Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State to postpone its convocation scheduled for the same date.

The separatist group's directive for a sit-at-home protest across the five South-East states has led to a flurry of activity among residents, with heavy security presence observed in major markets and schools across Anambra State. Residents were spotted engaging in last-minute purchases, fearing potential disruptions to business activities.

Furthermore, students participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination were seen relocating closer to their examination centers to avoid being stranded, mindful of IPOB's restriction on movement in the region.

The atmosphere was tense as customers thronged banks and Automated Teller Machine points to withdraw cash, ensuring they were adequately prepared for the day's events.

One resident, Grace Acho, expressed her urgency in making swift purchases at Eke Awka Market, highlighting the importance of stocking up on essentials amid uncertainties surrounding market closures.

As the day unfolds, residents remain vigilant, navigating through the security measures and disruptions prompted by the commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day.
