In a decisive move, the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology in Ikere Ekiti has expelled two female students involved in a bullying incident that gained attention after a distressing video went viral on social media. The video depicted one student assaulting another at an off-campus private hostel.
Following widespread outrage, the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, announced on Tuesday the commencement of a thorough investigation into the matter.
According to Mr. Temitope Akinbisoye, the university’s spokesperson, the disturbing footage showed 18-year-old Opemiposi Precious Bolaji, a first-year Mass Communication student, physically attacking her classmate, Gloria Ajayi, with a stick. The incident prompted immediate action by university officials, leading to an emergency meeting of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
The committee determined that Bolaji was guilty of severe misconduct and a blatant violation of the university's code of conduct, resulting in her expulsion. Another student, Osaro, who provided the stick used in the assault, was also expelled for her role as an accomplice.
Additionally, Mistura Adejuwon and Precious Olanrewaju, who recorded and posted the video on social media, received a stern warning and advice to report such incidents to the university's Directorate of Students’ Affairs instead of spreading them online.
The committee cleared another student, Olawale Ajewole, who had attempted to intervene during the incident, and the victim, Miss Ajayi, who did not retaliate during the assault.
Reiterating the university's firm stance against misconduct, Akinbisoye emphasized their commitment to maintaining a secure and supportive educational environment. He urged anyone witnessing or experiencing harassment to report it directly to the appropriate university authorities.
The local police, led by Commissioner Akinwale, are working closely with the university to ensure justice is served and to address the broader implications of such behavior within the academic community.
