May 10, 2024 – In a momentous occasion, the Nigerian Army has successfully reunited Lydia Simon, a once-abducted Chibok schoolgirl, along with her three children, with her family in Borno State. The heartwarming reunion took place at the Mailmalari Cantonment in Maiduguri.
Major General Waidi Shuaibu, Theatre Commander of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, announced the handover during a special ceremony. He revealed that troops from the 82 Division Task Force Battalion rescued Ms. Simon, who was pregnant, and her three children in the Gwoza Local Government Area on April 17.
The rescue of Lydia Simon marks her as the 18th abducted schoolgirl to be saved by the Nigerian military. The 2014 kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls sparked global outrage and led to the widespread #BringBackOurGirls campaign, intensifying efforts to secure their return.
“The relentless pursuits in terrorist enclaves have borne fruit, enabling us to rescue several captives, including the Chibok girls," said Maj. Gen. Shuaibu. He commended the continuous support and resources provided by military leadership which have been pivotal in these successful rescue operations.
Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, the acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, added that Lydia received medical care and support since her rescue. The military's commitment to rescuing all remaining captives remains steadfast, underlined by ongoing strategic military operations.
This reunion not only marks a significant achievement for the military but also brings hope to many families still awaiting the return of their loved ones. The efforts to find and reunite all the abducted Chibok girls with their families continue with renewed vigor and hope.
