Anambra State Police Detain Seven in Crackdown on Robbery and Cultism

In a significant law enforcement operation, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested seven individuals linked to armed robbery and cultism activities. The arrests were made public through a press release from SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command's spokesperson, on May 5, 2024.

During a routine patrol near UNIZIK Junction in Awka, officers from the Special Anti-Cult Squad intercepted a tricycle carrying five occupants. The police managed to arrest all individuals aboard, although two additional suspects remain at large, including one identified only as "Baby."

The items recovered in the operation include a cut-size double-barrel gun, an unregistered tricycle, and quantities of illegal drugs, pointing to the serious nature of the criminal activities being countered by the police.

Among those detained are young men, primarily in their late teens, who reportedly confessed to being members of the Vipers Cult group. The suspects admitted their intentions to rob unsuspecting road users of their valuables, particularly targeting mobile phones and other personal items. This confession has shed light on the gang’s involvement in recent disturbances within the Awka metropolis.

In response to the arrests and ongoing criminal activities, DCP Fidelis Ogarabe, acting as the Commissioner of Police, has commended the squad for their effective action and urged them to maintain their efforts in combating crime across the state.

The police are actively seeking the remaining suspects and continue their commitment to ensuring safety and reducing crime rates in Anambra State.
