NSCDC Cracks Down on Illegal Private Guards in Anambra, Recovers Weapons

In a recent operation in Awka, Anambra State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested eight individuals accused of operating as unlicensed private security guards. During the arrests, officers also confiscated four pump-action guns and 16 live cartridges.

Olatunde Maku, the NSCDC Commandant for Anambra State, detailed the arrests at a press briefing held at the agency’s headquarters. He emphasized the commitment of the NSCDC to regulate the private security sector, particularly against the backdrop of current security challenges.

"These arrests are part of our ongoing efforts to enforce the regulations surrounding private security operations,” Maku stated. “Under the directive of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, our actions are focused on fulfilling the core responsibilities of the corps within the state."

The operation that led to these arrests was conducted after intelligence gathering pointed to several individuals and groups operating without necessary licenses. Some were impersonating members of the Anambra Vigilance Group, while others were found providing security services to local hotels without proper authorization.

The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to eliminate illegal security outfits, which pose a significant threat to public safety. By removing these unregulated elements, the NSCDC aims to reduce the likelihood of security breaches and related criminal activities.

Maku warned that the campaign against illegal security services would continue vigorously. "We are sending a clear message to all non-compliant entities. Cease your operations or face legal actions. We are dedicated to purging the state of illicit activities that compromise the safety of our communities," he asserted.

Following the arrests, the suspects are undergoing thorough investigations. They are expected to be prosecuted in accordance with the law to ensure that justice is served and to deter similar illegal operations in the future.
