Oil marketers recently visited the Port Harcourt Refinery Company in Rivers State, expressing optimism that the facility might commence the sale of refined petroleum products this month. Members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) noted that the refinery's rehabilitation has reached an advanced stage.
According to the boss of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), the first phase of the plant's refurbishment has been completed. It is expected to refine 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, a process initiated after the Christmas period last year. With each barrel capable of producing approximately 170 liters of refined petroleum products, the refinery's output could amount to about 10.2 million liters of petrol and other derivatives.
Furthermore, the state-owned oil company announced plans to finalize the second phase of the refinery's upgrade by Q2 2024. This milestone will enable the plant to refine up to 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
This development follows closely on the heels of the Dangote refinery, which commenced diesel sales to marketers on Monday, April 15, 2024.
