Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, issued a stern warning to former governors and other past officials to avoid undermining his administration, during a press briefing in Makurdi upon his return from the United States.
Governor Alia, without directly naming individuals, responded to comments made by the former Governor Samuel Ortom during his 63rd birthday celebration. Ortom had critiqued some advisors around Governor Alia for fostering a contentious relationship with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stating that such advice does not serve the state's best interests.
Ortom emphasized the importance of collective support and guidance for the governor to ensure state harmony. "The governor alone cannot accomplish this; it requires our collective effort and support. If needed, I am ready to assist," Ortom remarked during his birthday speech.
Contrastingly, Governor Alia expressed his frustration with interference from predecessors, saying, "If you are a former governor and you have nothing constructive to contribute to Benue, it's better to remain silent. You had your time. Criticism is welcome, but it should be factual."
During his briefing, Governor Alia also shared insights from his recent trip to the USA where he, along with nine other governors from the North, participated in discussions at the US Peace Institute to address the insecurity issues plaguing the region. "The priority is to ensure the safe return of displaced persons to their homes, which is crucial for me," he said.
Governor Alia highlighted the ongoing improvements in local security, noting that areas like Gwer West, Gwer East, Guma, and Makurdi are witnessing a resurgence of farming activities thanks to the restored peace. He called on all citizens to contribute actively to maintaining security, stressing the importance of cooperation with law enforcement.
In his concluding remarks, Governor Alia reiterated his commitment to not only maintaining peace but also enhancing the economic prospects of the state by initiating employment opportunities and addressing the grievances of the youth. "Calling our youth thugs is an insult to their dignity. We aim to uplift them and not let their past struggles be in vain," Alia asserted.
