Dr. Kabir Adamu, Founder and CEO of Beacon Consulting, revealed that his research indicates no fewer than 5,000 Nigerians were killed between January and June this year. Speaking as a panellist during a live television event in Abuja organized by Daria Media Limited, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, and facilitated by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi, Adamu criticized the current state of insecurity in Nigeria. He highlighted the troubling trend of communities in northern Nigeria being forced by non-state actors to pay levies before they can farm, describing it as a failure of the security apparatus to protect citizens.
Adamu called for improvements to demonstrate progress in addressing these issues, asserting that paying levies to non-state actors underscores the security system's failure.
Brigadier General Sani Usman (rtd), former Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized the need to empower ordinary Nigerians to actively contribute to tackling insecurity. He noted that the security challenges in Nigeria stem from political, economic, and social factors, which are interrelated.
Kole Shetima, Director of the MacArthur Foundation in Africa, affirmed the Foundation’s commitment to ensuring accountability and supporting Nigerian government efforts, civil society groups, and institutions.
Kadaria Ahmed, CEO of Daria Media Limited, described the event as a platform for engaging government, citizens, civil society, the diplomatic corps, and media, aimed at evaluating the government's performance in economy, security, and governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
