NLC Leaders Endorse N70,000 New Minimum Wage Offered by Tinubu

The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have endorsed and accepted the new national minimum wage of N70,000 offered by President Bola Tinubu to Organised Labour during Thursday’s meeting. This decision was made during an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held yesterday.

In a communiqué by the President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, at the end of the NEC meeting, it was stated that the emergency meeting was convened in response to the outcomes of the meeting with the federal government, which took place on July 18, 2024, at the Presidential Villa with the new National Minimum Wage as the main focus. The meeting was presided over by President Tinubu.

The communiqué noted, “The NEC-in-session, after extensive deliberations, unanimously commended and applauded the doggedness of the leadership of the Congress on the courage and forthrightness with which they handled the National Minimum Wage fixing exercise. The NEC-in-session accepts the President’s offer of N70,000 (Seventy thousand Naira) as the new National Minimum Wage and the three-yearly tenure for its review."

The NEC-in-session also demanded full and strict compliance with the dictates of the National Minimum Wage 2024 when it becomes an Act. It acknowledged that this decision, although challenging and far from their initial demand, was made in the spirit of solidarity and sacrifice for the Nigerian masses to avert a threatened further hike in the price of petrol, which would inflict more hardship on the already suffering masses.

“Once again, NEC-in-session restates the commitment of the NLC to continue to stand resolutely in its mission to defend and advance the rights of Nigerian workers and the Nigerian people at all times. It therefore calls on all Nigerians to unite in this cause and to hold our leaders accountable to the same standards of sacrifice and service.”

This endorsement signifies a significant step towards improving the living standards of Nigerian workers and reflects the NLC's ongoing commitment to defending the rights of workers and Nigerians.
