The family of the late musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has undertaken a new autopsy to further investigate the cause of his death. This action comes after a previous autopsy did not provide conclusive results.
Reports indicate that Magistrate T.A. Shotobi of the Ikorodu Coroner Court in Lagos granted an order for Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, to commission an independent autopsy. The order also stipulated that Mr. Aloba would cover all associated costs.
The family’s legal representative announced that the fresh autopsy was conducted on July 19 and 20. If the initial examination does not reveal the cause of death, additional toxicology and histology tests will be performed on the collected samples.
“This second autopsy, mandated by the Coroner Court and conducted on July 19 and 20, is a two-phase process,” the representative stated. “The first phase has been completed, and if necessary, the second phase will involve further testing to determine the cause of death.”
The procedure was observed by Mohbad’s father and two pathologists: one appointed by Mr. Aloba and the other chosen by Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi Aloba.
Previously, Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023, had generated widespread speculation and controversy. The singer, formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Music, had left the label in February 2022. In response to his death, the Lagos State Police formed a special investigation team, leading to arrests including that of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry.
On September 21, 2023, Mohbad’s body was exhumed for an autopsy. However, a pathologist testified on May 15 that the cause of death could not be determined due to the decomposition of the body. Further complicating matters, a US-based laboratory later refuted claims that a toxicology test was conducted on the remains.
Esther Dede, Client Services Associate at NMS Labs, clarified that the lab had no record of a case involving Mohbad.
