Bank MD Faces Jail for Alleged Court Order Violation

The Managing Director of a new generation bank, Walter Akpani, faces potential imprisonment for allegedly failing to comply with a court order to unfreeze the bank accounts of Energen Oil and Gas Limited and Applause Global Services Nigeria Ltd.

Justice M. Savage of the Lagos State High Court issued a notice highlighting the consequences of disobedience to the court's directive, which instructed Providus Bank Limited and three other banks to lift restrictions on the accounts in question.

The court's order, issued after reviewing an originating motion dated June 25, 2024, mandates that the banks, their officers, and affiliates must not place any liens, restrictions, or "Post-No-Debit" notices on the applicants' accounts without lawful justification.

Following submissions from the applicants' counsel, Abayomi Alagbada, the court ordered the immediate removal of all restrictions, allowing the applicants full access to their accounts. The specific accounts mentioned include Account No. 1305009826 of Energen Oil and Gas Ltd at Providus Bank Ltd, along with the accounts of beneficiaries Fadima Talo Global Enterprise (Account No. 5400875119) and Noorie Global Multi-Trade (Account No. 5401867467), both at Providus Bank Ltd.

Failure to comply with this order could result in severe legal consequences for Akpani and the involved banks.
