Senator Ali Ndume has declined the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Tourism, citing his lack of experience and exposure to lead such a sensitive group. This decision comes just two days after his removal as Chief Whip of the Senate.
In a statement made at his country home in Maiduguri on Friday, the Borno South lawmaker expressed his reasoning for declining the post, emphasizing that he never aspired to be the Senate whip after serving as the leader in the 8th Senate.
Ndume revealed that he had the option to choose a committee to serve as vice-chairman, having played a significant role in the campaign that led to Godwill Akpabio's emergence as President of the Senate.
"The party recommended my removal as Chief Whip, and I see it as an act of God. If it is God who gave me that position, it is God who took it through the APC. So, I bear no grudges about that," Ndume stated.
He clarified that he did not seek the role of Chief Whip or vice-chairman of the appropriation committee. "I contested to be one of the Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and God granted me that victory. I'm content with what God has given me."
Regarding his decision to decline the Tourism Committee chairmanship, Ndume reiterated, "I am inexperienced in that field. I don't know anything about tourism. I would prefer to remain an ordinary member so I can learn."
Responding to his earlier criticism of President Bola Tinubu, Ndume affirmed his stance and urged the President to take appropriate measures to alleviate the suffering of the people. "I did not say anything wrong. I stand by all my statements in the interview I granted."
On the suggestion to resign from the APC, Ndume highlighted his long-standing affiliation with the party. He recounted how, with the backing of his people, he joined the APC when ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu urged him to sign a document to join at the Imo House in Abuja. "I am not a new member. It was in consultation with my people that I joined APC," Ndume concluded.
