The House of Representatives’ Minority Caucus, consisting of 180 lawmakers, has joined the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021. Kanu faces treason charges from the Federal Government due to his efforts to secede the Igbo region from Nigeria.
In a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, the minority caucus, which includes members from various political parties, endorsed a motion calling for Kanu’s release. The motion was presented by Obi Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, during a special caucus session on Monday night.
Aguocha urged his colleagues to take a firm stance on the issue and explore political solutions to address Kanu’s continued detention. He highlighted that the resolution on Kanu’s case is vital for national peace, stability, and unity.
The Minority Caucus includes lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, the Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with five seats. Additionally, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) each have two seats.
Aguocha emphasized the need for a unified approach within the Minority Caucus, noting that the resolution on Kanu’s situation addresses broader issues such as security, infrastructure decay, and economic challenges.
