The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has launched an ambitious training program targeting 1,480 teachers from rural and hard-to-reach schools across Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative aims to address the educational disparities faced by students in isolated areas by enhancing the instructional skills of their teachers, particularly in multigrade and mixed-ability classroom settings.
During the kickoff ceremony in Abuja, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the executive secretary of UBEC, highlighted the critical challenges obstructing the implementation of quality universal basic education in Nigeria. According to Dr. Bobboyi, one of the primary issues is the difficulty in providing accessible and quality education in remote areas, which often results in low school enrollment and high dropout rates.
Dr. Bobboyi, represented by Prof. Bala Zakari, the deputy executive secretary Technical, emphasized that the quality of education in these underserved regions is compromised by the scarcity of qualified teaching staff. This scarcity not only undermines educational outcomes but also discourages parents from investing in their children's education.
The newly introduced training program focuses on equipping teachers with the necessary skills to effectively manage classrooms that accommodate students at various learning stages and capabilities. By adopting multigrade and mixed-ability teaching methods, educators will be better prepared to address the diverse needs of their students, ensuring that each child receives a tailored educational experience that promotes better learning outcomes.
