President Tinubu Directs Rapid Completion of Key Northern Highway

President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, mandating the completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Katsina-Kano Federal Highway within one year. This announcement came during a meeting with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in Abuja.

Project Specifications and Contractors

Minister Umahi unveiled the project's execution plan, which involves dividing the highway into three major sections to be developed concurrently. The first segment, totaling 76 kilometers, will be constructed by Dangote Group of Companies utilizing a tax credit scheme and concrete materials. The subsequent 82 kilometers will be handled by Julius Berger, and the final 40 kilometers will be developed by BUA Group, also using concrete. "I can assure you that work on these three sections will commence within this month of May," Umahi confirmed.

Additional Infrastructure Developments

In addition to the highway project, Minister Umahi discussed the president's directive concerning the design of the 1,000-kilometer Sokoto-Badagry highway, covering a historic trade route through multiple states and ending in Badagry. The ministry is also exploring the possibility of linking the Southeast to the North via the Trans-Sahara Highway, with potential spurs passing through Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and ending in Abuja.

Governor Sani’s Praise for Federal Initiatives

Governor Uba Sani praised the president's vision and commitment to enhancing Nigeria's infrastructure, which he believes is pivotal for socio-economic development. He highlighted the strategic significance of other road projects like the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry highways and their potential to boost economic activities across the country.

Importance of Road Infrastructure

The governor emphasized the vital role of the Eastern Bypass and the Mando-Benigwari road in Kaduna State, noting their importance for agricultural programs in the Northwest. These projects are expected to facilitate better connectivity and support the region's economic growth, especially in agriculture.

This ambitious timeline for the Abuja-Kaduna-Katsina-Kano highway reflects the government's proactive stance on infrastructure development, aiming to significantly improve transportation logistics and economic activities across Northern Nigeria.
