May 10, 2024 - The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has officially repudiated claims made by an individual in a viral video who alleges to be his son. In a decisive move, the palace has reported the matter to the authorities, seeking legal repercussions for what it considers a fraudulent impersonation.
The palace spokesperson, Moses Olafare, issued a detailed statement denouncing the claims of the alleged son, emphasizing the Ooni's role as a responsible parent and a guardian of traditional values. Olafare clarified that Oba Ogunwusi is well aware of his paternal responsibilities and maintains a close relationship with all his legitimate offspring, dismissing any affiliations with the claimant.
"This individual’s claims are not only unfounded but are also a disservice to the dignity of our traditional institution," Olafare stated. He further detailed that the self-proclaimed son is neither recognized by the palace nor by the community of Ile-Ife.
The statement also highlighted the gravity of impersonating a royal family member, describing it as a severe cultural and legal transgression. It provided a list of the Ooni's acknowledged children, outlining their respective lives and locations to underscore the transparency and accountability with which the Ooni has conducted his familial responsibilities.
The palace has called upon the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Security to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations, urging swift action to apprehend and prosecute the impersonator. It appealed to the public to come forward with any information that might assist in locating the individual.
This incident comes at a sensitive time as the palace prepares for significant ceremonial activities, including the formal introduction of the Ooni's newborn twins into the royal household according to traditional customs.
The Ooni's office reassured the public of its commitment to upholding the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and stated that it would not tolerate attempts to tarnish its reputation through deceptive and illicit activities.
