NYSC Advises Corps Members to Respect Traditions and Avoid Politics in Host Communities

May 10, 2024 - The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a stern directive to its corps members, urging them to respect the customs and avoid political involvement in their host communities. Mrs. Blessing Iruma, the NYSC Coordinator for Anambra State, emphasized this guidance during her address to the Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 corps members at their orientation course in Awka.

Mrs. Iruma stressed the importance of integration into local communities for the corps members as they begin their year of national service. “Respect the cultures and traditions of your host communities. Do not challenge their ways or engage in local political activities,” she advised. This approach, she noted, would foster mutual respect and ensure a harmonious coexistence during their service year.

The coordinator also encouraged the new corps members to engage positively with the community by identifying local needs and working towards addressing them. "Strive to leave the communities better than you found them," Iruma added, highlighting the transformative potential of the NYSC program.

In addition to community integration, Iruma urged corps members to pursue personal and professional development through post-camp training and the creation of bankable project proposals. She highlighted the role of social media as a tool for promoting unity and peace, but cautioned against its negative use.

Echoing the NYSC’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its members, she also warned against unauthorized journeys and night travels, which pose significant safety risks. "The country values you immensely and wants you to remain alive to contribute to the development of self and the nation," she said.

This guidance comes as the NYSC continues to play a crucial role in fostering national unity by exposing young Nigerians to different cultures and environments across the country. By adhering to these guidelines, corps members are expected to not only enhance their own lives but also enrich the communities that host them.
