Nigeria's music industry is booming, and the numbers speak volumes. Spotify's 2024 Loud & Clear Report unveils a staggering revelation: Nigerian entertainers amassed over N25 billion in streaming royalties in 2023 alone, marking an exponential 2,500% surge since 2017.

Fueling this remarkable growth is Nigeria's rich musical landscape, boasting a population of 230 million and harboring some of Africa's most prominent artists. Streaming platforms like Spotify have revolutionized the industry, enabling artists to reach global audiences and reap financial rewards for their craft.

Spotify's data sheds light on the tremendous impact of streaming on Nigerian music:

  • Streaming royalties for Nigerian artists on Spotify surpassed N25 billion in 2023, doubling from the previous year.
  • The number of Nigerian artists earning over 10 million NGN in royalties quadrupled since 2018.
  • More than half of these royalties were earned by independent artists or labels, illustrating the democratizing effect of streaming.

Beyond Afrobeats, Nigeria's music scene is undergoing a genre renaissance. Spotify data reveals surging popularity in local genres:

  • Highlife, Igbo Pop, and Fuji genres witnessed substantial increases in listenership, with significant growth recorded in the last 12 months and Q1 2024.
  • Top artists like K1 De Ultimate, Umu Obiligbo, and Phyno continue to dominate, while tracks like Adewale Ayuba's "Koloba Koloba," Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe's "Nwanem Ebezina," and KCee's "Ojapiano" captivate audiences.

Listenership demographics reveal intriguing insights, with men predominantly consuming local genres while Gen Z emerges as the leading age group across all categories.

Notably, cities like Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Katsina emerge as hotspots for streaming local genres, further showcasing Nigeria's diverse musical tapestry and the nation's unwavering passion for music.
