Senator Rufai Hanga of Kano Central Senatorial District recently made headlines with his donation of 5,000 pieces of white fabric and clay pots to his constituents, a gesture intended to assist with traditional Muslim burial processes. This initiative, however, has sparked both commendation and criticism within the community and across social media.
The donated items, which align with the burial customs observed in Northern Nigeria, were provided in response to frequent requests from constituents for burial assistance. Dawuud Auwal, one of the Senator’s aides, highlighted on social media that such requests often include not just materials for burial but also transport for the deceased.
Senator Hanga, an accountant by profession and a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has represented the 15 local government areas of Kano Central since 2023. While some community members appreciate the support for funeral costs, others question the prioritization of resources, suggesting that the focus should perhaps be on more pressing socioeconomic issues like healthcare, employment, and infrastructure.
Criticism of the donation has been particularly vocal on Twitter, where users express concerns over the implications of the gesture. A tweet from @VoiceofHausa criticized the senator for focusing on burial aids instead of more substantial projects like hospital construction. Another user, @silastafi, questioned the underlying message of the donations, asking if the senator was "wishing them dead or something?"
Further adding to the controversy, @Iamumarfaisal argued that while providing burial support might suit a private citizen of influence and means, framing such donations as a senatorial achievement was inappropriate and belittling to the constituents.
The debate continues as the community grapples with the senator's actions, reflecting broader questions about the role of elected officials in addressing the needs of their constituencies. Despite the controversy, the donations will proceed as planned, leaving a divided community in their wake.
