Lagos Launches Market Safety Drive: Crackdown on Unauthorized Structures

In a proactive move to safeguard lives and property, the Lagos State Government initiates a vigorous campaign against unauthorized constructions and extensions in markets across the state. Spearheaded by the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc Gbolahan Oki, this crackdown aims to restore safety and orderliness within commercial hubs.

The enforcement drive, endorsed by a multitude of agencies, follows recommendations from the Dosunmu Fire Incident Committee, led by Commissioner Gbenga Oyerinde. Oki underscores the critical need to dismantle unauthorized extensions, which often impede emergency rescue operations during crises, as witnessed in recent fire outbreaks at Mandilas Building and Dosumu Market.

Oki emphasizes the removal of obstructive structures as a pivotal step towards enhancing accessibility for first responders and ensuring swift intervention during emergencies. Expressing zero tolerance for lawlessness, Oki warns shop owners to promptly dismantle illegal extensions, stressing that enforcement efforts will extend across the state.

The campaign targets various forms of encroachments, including the mounting of generators on rooftops and iron staircases, a practice deemed hazardous. The collaborative effort involves multiple agencies such as the Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and Lagos State Environmental Services, among others.

Witnessing the removal of unauthorized structures in bustling market districts like Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Dosunmu, Ereko, and Balogun, this concerted effort signifies a pivotal stride towards enhancing safety and restoring order in Lagos' commercial centers.
