FG Invites Labour for Minimum Wage Talks on Friday

The Federal Government has extended an invitation to organised Labour for the resumption of negotiations on the minimum wage, following a breakdown in talks earlier this week. According to a source familiar with the matter, a letter has been sent to Labour, signed by the committee chairman and the NSIWC chairman, scheduling the meeting for Friday.

Labour is expected to attend the meeting, with hopes of receiving a better offer from the government. The recent adjournment of talks occurred after Labour rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of N60,000, insisting on their demand for a higher figure. In response, Labour lowered its demand slightly to N494,000, aiming to expedite the negotiation process and reach a resolution before the end of the month.

With the May Day ultimatum set to expire on Friday night, Labour remains steadfast in its commitment to securing a new minimum wage that adequately addresses the needs of workers. The President of the TUC reiterated the ultimatum, emphasizing the importance of reaching an agreement by the end of May to maintain industrial peace.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment appealed to Labour to consider the economic challenges facing the country, urging them to be patriotic in their demands. She highlighted the government's efforts to prioritize the well-being of citizens and called for collective efforts to overcome economic challenges.

The government's concession to increase the proposed minimum wage from N57,000 to N60,000 demonstrates a willingness to address Labour's concerns and reach a mutually beneficial agreement. As negotiations resume on Friday, both parties aim to find common ground and ensure a fair and realistic wage for Nigerian workers.
