Estate Agent Sentenced to Three Years for N700,000 Theft

In a ruling at the Ikeja Special Offences Court, estate agent Peter Nwogu-Anucha received a three-year prison sentence for embezzling N700,000. Justice Rahman Oshodi, presiding over the case, affirmed the prosecution's case against Nwogu-Anucha and his company, Business Defense Solutions Ltd.

The court found that Nwogu-Anucha, acting as a realtor, misrepresented his legal authority to lease a property to Mr. Obinna Ukpabi. Despite receiving the agreed sum, Nwogu-Anucha failed to fulfill his obligations, neither providing possession of the property nor refunding the money as promised. Evidence suggested that the funds were misappropriated on the same day they were received, indicating fraudulent intent.

Despite years of legal proceedings since his initial arraignment in 2018, Nwogu-Anucha's lack of remorse and previous convictions for similar offenses contributed to the severity of his sentence. Justice Oshodi emphasized the impact of the crime on the victim and denounced Nwogu-Anucha's repeated exploitation of unsuspecting individuals.

Consequently, Nwogu-Anucha was sentenced to three years in prison, retroactively starting from March 12, 2018, the date of his remand. Additionally, his company, Business Defense Solutions Ltd., was fined N500,000, payable within 90 days of the judgment.

The verdict sends a clear message about the consequences of financial misconduct and underscores the court's commitment to upholding justice and protecting the rights of citizens.
