Deadly Clash Erupts Between Fuel Hawkers and 'Show Boys' in Lagos

A tragic altercation erupted yesterday on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway in Lagos, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to several others. The incident occurred in the Mile 2 area and involved diesel hawkers and a local group known as 'Show Boys.'

Sources provide conflicting accounts of what sparked the violent clash. Some suggest the confrontation began over allegations of adulterated petrol being sold by the hawkers. Another theory is that the fight was triggered by disputes over recent price hikes in petroleum products, which were seen as unjustified by some community members.

Eyewitnesses reported that tensions flared when a customer, having purchased what he believed was diesel from a roadside vendor, returned claiming he had been sold regular oil instead. The ensuing argument rapidly escalated as both parties resorted to using dangerous objects.

A local who identified himself only as Sheu shared his insights, noting, "The hawkers were charging exorbitant prices—N3,500 to N4,500 for just five liters of petrol—to people who are also struggling to make ends meet. They were warned just last Monday to lower their prices since they don't pay rent for the space they use, but they ignored the advice. It was this ongoing issue over pricing that led to the tragic outbreak of violence."

The incident has heightened tensions in the area, drawing attention to the volatility of unregulated street vending and the dire need for oversight in commodity pricing to prevent further such occurrences. The community now mourns the unnecessary loss of life and calls for measures to ensure such a tragedy does not repeat.
