Airtel Nigeria Captures Lead in Telecom Market Growth

LAGOS — Airtel Nigeria has emerged as a leader in the telecommunications sector, achieving significant gains in market share, according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

As of March 2024, Airtel Nigeria expanded its market share to an impressive 29%, establishing itself as a dominant force in the regional telecom industry. This growth contrasts sharply with its competitors, as MTN faced a decline of 3.19% in market share, while 9mobile saw a decrease of 0.5%. Even Glo, another major player, experienced a slight drop of 0.58% in its share of internet subscribers.

Airtel Nigeria’s rise is particularly noteworthy in the context of its internet service expansion. The company reported a robust 165% increase in internet subscriber basis points, a surge that aligns with the rollout of its Airtel 5G network that began in June 2023. This advancement highlights Airtel's commitment to expanding its technological infrastructure and enhancing service delivery across Nigeria.

The company's success in boosting its market presence comes during a challenging period for mobile network operators who are grappling with rising operational costs and exchange rate volatility.

Airtel Nigeria's recent performance cements its status as a frontrunner in Nigeria’s competitive telecom landscape, signaling a strong market position amid ongoing economic pressures.
