A devastating road accident on the Akungba-Ikare Road in the Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State resulted in the deaths of three individuals this Friday.
The incident involved a Toyota Camry, with the registration number LND 592 GX, and two commercial buses. An eyewitness reported that the accident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Camry abruptly opened his door, striking a motorcycle that was carrying the three victims. This unexpected action caused the motorcyclist to lose balance, leading to the victims falling onto the road where they were tragically run over by an oncoming vehicle.
The victims died instantly at the scene of the accident. The car driver, in a state of panic, fled the scene to avoid potential mob violence, abandoning his vehicle which was later set on fire by outraged local youths.
Ezekiel Son’Allah, the Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the details of the crash. He attributed the cause to wrongful overtaking and route violations. Following the incident, the victims were transported to Aduloju Hospital in Akungba by police officers.
Son’Allah took the opportunity to urge motorists in the area to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future. He suggested that installing speed breakers on the road might help in reducing the frequency of accidents, thereby enhancing safety for all road users.
