In a heart-wrenching road tragedy, 19 individuals lost their lives in a fiery collision on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the devastating incident, which occurred this past Sunday.
The crash involved a commercial bus and a large truck, both of which caught fire following a severe head-on collision. The FRSC detailed that the accident occurred due to the truck, operated by Dangote and bearing the registration NSH680YJ, making an improper overtaking maneuver. The truck collided with a Toyota Hiace bus, registered under KMC455ZE, which was correctly traveling within its lane from Kano.
Tragically, out of the 22 male passengers aboard the bus, only three survived with varying degrees of injuries, while the others perished in the blaze. The deceased have been taken to the Okene General Hospital.
Dauda Biu, the FRSC corps marshal, expressed his deep condolences and reiterated the agency's commitment to prosecuting negligent drivers who cause such irreversible losses. He also urged judicial bodies and transport union leaders to collaborate more closely with FRSC to enhance the enforcement of road safety laws and ensure justice is served promptly.
