Over 250 Rescued by Nigerian Navy After Boat Capsizes in Rivers Creek

In a dramatic late-night operation, the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder rescued over 250 passengers, including children, from the capsized cargo boat MV Precious Emmanuel along the Buguma waterways in Asari-Toru LGA of Rivers State. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Sunday, sparking a swift maritime response.

Originating from Sangana in Brass LGA of Bayelsa State, the boat was en route to the Nembe jetty in Port Harcourt, carrying goods estimated to be worth millions of naira, including smoked fish, crayfish, plantains, and crates of alcoholic beverages.

Upon receiving the distress call, the crew of NNS Pathfinder launched a rescue operation, noting with concern that none of the passengers aboard were wearing life jackets. The navy deployed life-saving equipment and personnel, managing to safely recover all individuals on board the sinking vessel.

Commodore Desmond Igbo, the Commander of NNS Pathfinder, addressed the media, expressing his relief that the operation concluded without any fatalities. He took the opportunity to stress the critical importance of safety practices in maritime transport, particularly the use of life vests.

"The successful outcome of this operation is a testament to the effectiveness of our naval forces and the importance of quick response to maritime emergencies," Commodore Igbo stated. He also emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure that maritime safety regulations are strictly followed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
