Over 1.4 Million UTME Candidates Fail to Hit 200 Mark, Reveals JAMB

In a significant update from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), results from the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) show that a majority of candidates struggled to achieve high marks. Of the 1,842,464 candidates whose results were released, 1,402,490, which constitutes about 78%, scored below the 200 mark out of a possible 400.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, provided a detailed breakdown: 8,401 candidates scored 300 and above; 77,070 candidates achieved between 250 and 299; 439,974 candidates scored between 200 and 249, while a significant number fell below the 200 threshold.

Oloyede emphasized the board's stance on not publicly announcing top scorers due to the UTME serving primarily as a ranking examination, influenced by various institutional admission parameters. "Given the varied criteria used by different institutions, generating a definitive list of top scorers is not only challenging but might be unrealistic," he explained.

Addressing the issue of result verification and public recognition, the Registrar urged verification of any claims by candidates regarding their scores before they are offered awards. This comes in response to past controversies over candidate score disputes.

Furthermore, the results of 64,624 candidates are currently withheld pending investigations into discrepancies and potential misconduct. Oloyede also noted the absence of 80,810 candidates from the exams despite registration.

JAMB's global reach was also highlighted with examinations conducted in international centers across several countries, aiming to attract foreign students and promote the universality of Nigeria's educational institutions.

The examination board is currently preparing for the upcoming UTME sessions in these international venues, continuing its effort to maintain and enhance the standard of tertiary education admissions in Nigeria.
