NELFUND Issues Warning Over Fraudulent Student Loan Websites

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued an advisory to students cautioning them against engaging with fraudulent websites claiming to offer government-backed educational loans. The alert was made public through a statement by Nasir Ayitogo, NELFUND’s Head of Media and Public Relations, released in Abuja this past Friday.

According to the statement, NELFUND management was made aware of a deceptive advertisement promoting a 'Federal Study Loan' on the website www.fedstudyloan-gov.ng, purporting to be part of the Federal Government’s student loan program. Ayitogo clarified that this website is in no way associated with NELFUND and denounced any efforts by such fraudulent schemes to exploit students seeking financial assistance for their education.

“NELFUND is deeply committed to the security and welfare of our students and ensures to provide only trustworthy information and support for their educational financing needs,” Ayitogo stated. He also encouraged anyone who has fallen victim to this scam to report the incident to the appropriate authorities immediately.

Ayitogo confirmed that the legitimate and official channel for applying for student loans will soon be accessible to the public via www.nelf.gov.ng.

Further details provided by the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, on April 18 reveal that funding for the loan program will be sourced from one percent of the annual revenue generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service. According to NELFUND, an estimated 1.2 million students enrolled in tertiary institutions and recognized skill acquisition centers are expected to benefit from the first batch of the loan scheme.
