After a two-year renovation period, the House of Representatives of Nigeria has officially resumed plenary sessions in their revamped chambers. The renovation project, which began in 2022, was a comprehensive overhaul of the facilities, marking a significant milestone since their last major update during the late General Sani Abacha's military regime.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, along with the immediate past Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, led a final inspection of the chambers on Monday. This inspection also included a tour of the newly constructed National Assembly Library, an addition aimed at enhancing legislative research and support.
The speakers and several principal officers, along with members of the House, participated in the inspection, expressing their approval of the updated facilities. The renovation included modern technological upgrades intended to facilitate more efficient and transparent legislative processes.
The return to the renovated chambers was delayed several times, extending the lawmakers' tenure in temporary quarters due to unforeseen delays in the renovation work. However, the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, addressed the media with a sense of satisfaction regarding the new installations and the overall aesthetic of the chambers.
Former Speaker Gbajabiamila remarked on the completion of the project, noting his wish that the renovations had been completed during his tenure, reflecting on the significance of the improvements for future legislative activities.
The reopening of the renovated chambers is seen as a symbol of progress and modernization within the Nigerian legislative framework, promising a new era of governance from a more functional and conducive legislative environment.
