Ahead of the upcoming 2024 Workers' Day, organized labor has articulated its expectations, urging the Federal Government to announce revisions to the minimum wage on May 1st.
Tommy Etim, the National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress, likened Workers' Day to a festive occasion for workers, emphasizing the significance of addressing their welfare concerns. He expressed concerns about government policies exacerbating poverty levels and diminishing the purchasing power of Nigerians.
Etim highlighted the importance of unveiling a new minimum wage on Workers' Day, along with the anticipation for additional incentives to mitigate the adverse effects of governmental policies. Additionally, he underscored the expectation for the long-awaited launch of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses promised by the government.
According to Sunday PUNCH, organized labor, represented by the Nigerian Labour Congress and TUC, has proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage. Etim reiterated the workforce's eagerness for this adjustment.
An anonymous source within organized labor, involved in negotiations for the new wage, disclosed that the proposed figure of N615,000 per month emerged after extensive consultations between the NLC and TUC. However, the source hinted at the possibility of further increases, particularly in light of recent electricity tariff hikes.
"We have communicated our proposed minimum wage figure of N615,000 to the government. That is the unified stance of the NLC and TUC. The government is aware," the source affirmed.
